Young musicians gather for talent show in Hove

Musicians are gathering at the Hove Centre tomorrow (Saturday, October 1) to take part in what is billed as the UK’s biggest music competition.

The regional showcase of Open Mic UK’s takes place at the venue in Cromwell Road from 1pm.

Singer-songwriter Alice Ella Veryzer made it through the audition stage for the chance to perform before industry experts, A&R associates and a live audience.

Alice said: “I can’t wait to show everyone what I’ve been working on.

“I’m doing my own song and then a cover, which I’ve been working really hard on getting right.”

Hailing from a musical family, Alice received early operatic coaching from her mother, allowing her to adapt her own unique musical style.

The starlet draws inspiration from lady-of-the-moment ‘Jessie J’ but the songs that Alice writes from her piano at home reflect the struggle of an eight-year battle with fatigue syndrome, Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME).

After spending most of her mid-teens in a wheelchair, the constant care and support of her mother has helped Alice to regain good health and pursue her dream.

With a gig at Ronnie Scott’s, under her belt, Alice is beginning to catch the eye of industry professionals.

Former winners of the Open Mic UK competition include Birdy who was signed to Warner Music aged 12.

Birdy recently gained attention from Radio 1 with her LiveLounge cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love.

The Under 16’s final is 1.15-3pm, the 16-23’s will be 4.30-6.30pm and the Over 23’s will be 8.15-10pm.

Tickets are £7.50 available from www.openmicuk.co.uk or on the door (subject to availability).
