Sheffield Wednesday 3 Brighton & Hove Albion 1
The Albion lost again at Hillsborough in a game that saw Matthew Upson’s debut at centre half and a straight red card for Ashley Barnes. Albion coach Charlie Oatway was also sent to the stand along with Owls manger Dave Jones after a touchline bust-up.
Leroy Lita headed Wednesday in front after just five minutes and just half an hour later Danny Pugh fired home a free kick from a tight angle to double the advantage. It was Barnes’s challenge that resulted in the free kick and his sending off.
Leo Ulloa had a couple of good chances for the Seagulls then, 10 minutes into the second half, Andrea Orlandi scored from the edge of the area to put Albion back in with a fighting chance.
But it was just two minutes later that Tomasz Kuszczak flapped at a corner and Michail Antonio steered the ball home in the goalmouth scramble.
This was an afternoon the Albion will quickly want to get out of their system.
