The Go! Team are quite an enigma in the music world. They formed in 2000 after founder member Ian Parton really wanted to merged together an unusual conglomerate of musical ideas that would see the use of electro, old skool hip hop, indie guitar work, double Dutch chants and Bollywood soundtracks! Sounds weird right? Well, somehow Ian’s bravery has worked out just fine.
He recorded the debut album ‘Thunder, Lightening, Strike’ with its meticulously chosen samples and trashy live instruments in his parents kitchen, unleashed it in September 2004, got bucket loads of critical acclaim and was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2005. Radio airplay from BBC Radio 1, XFM and the likes followed, then video game trailer music for ‘LittleBigPlanet’ was added and to top it off, their music was used on an USA tv commercial.
The follow-up album ‘Proof Of Youth’ arrived in 2007 and four years later, the ‘Rolling Blackouts’ album appeared. My fave Go! Team album 2015’s ‘The Scene Between’ with its awesome ‘What D’You Say?’ single was the fourth instalment and now ‘Semicircle’ will debut to the world on 19th January 2018.
The forthcoming fifth platter will be available in various limited edition album bundles, including neon pink vinyl and signed screen printed test pressings, as well as the usual CD, cassette and download formats.
In support of the exciting new release Ian Parton and his current band-mates (Angela “Maki” Won-Yin Mak, Nkechi Ka Egenamba (aka Ninja), Sam Dook, Cheryl Pinero and Simone Odaranile) are embarking on various legs world tours during next year. Starting off in the UK, they pull into home port on Sunday 11th February at The Haunt in Pool Valley, Brighton, before playing other dates up and down the country, then whisking off to the Netherlands, Germany, USA and Canada in just the first quarter of the year.
Support acts for the Brighton show will be GURR and Neon Saints Brass.
I am rather pleased about seeing GURR again, as they performed at this years Great Escape. Where we reported “Gurr are a girl duo from Berlin, that expand into a four piece when playing live. Just like Spanish garage pop ladies Hinds have done. In fact Gurr do sound like Hinds and they are both fun bands too. Gurr have released an album last October entitled In My Head and now have actually quit their jobs and are hopefully going to make a success of their music career. Their final track tonight was their version of Helter Skelter and very good it was too”. Hear their sounds here: https://gurrband.bandcamp.com/
The fun 12-piece Neon Saints Brass band are Brighton’s answer to New Orleans jazz, soul, funk, and hip-hop brass. Their sound should sit quite nicely with the new Go! Team album. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/neonsaintsbrassband
