A drunk biker has been banned from the roads for three years after a chase through Brighton.
Darren Moore, 43, sped off to try to evade police while more than four times the drink drive limit.
Police were called after Moore almost crashed his motorbike in the Southwick Tunnel while heading towards Hove along the A27 Brighton bypass on Thursday 4 December.
Officers chased him down Dyke Road in Brighton and tried to block him in at the junction with Highcroft Villas with a police patrol vehicle.
But Moore swerved around the road block.
Sussex Police said: “He was eventually caught in Reigate Road, Brighton, and arrested at 8.20pm before being charged with failing to stop for police and drink driving.”
A breathalyser recorded a reading of 152 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath. This was more than four times the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Moore, of Windermere Crescent, Worthing, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last Friday (5 December) where he pleaded guilty to both charges.
The bench banned him from driving for 36 months, ordered him to do 200 hours of community service and pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
Superintendent Jane Derrick said: “Moore was already endangering himself and other motorists with his erratic driving on the A27 but made things even worse by trying to escape from the officers following him.
“Drink driving is totally unacceptable and we will not tolerate it in any form.
“If you see someone driving who you think could have been drinking, please call us on 999 so that we can prevent other people being put in danger.”
Moore is the second person to be convicted of drink driving this month during the annual month-long Christmas crackdown.
Officers tried and failed to set up a road block?!? He ‘swerved round it’?
Isn’t the whole point of a road block that it, er, “blocks” the “road” so you cannot simply drive around it? Otherwise it’s not so much a road block as a road obstacle.
