A pedestrian has died after being hit by a police car in Brighton in the early hours of this morning (Friday 25 August).

The man died at the scene despite attempts to save him, with medics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance in attendance.

A stretch of Edward Street – a key east-west artery – has been closed while investigations are carried out.

Sussex Police has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as required by law when someone dies in this way.

Sussex Police said: “A police car has been involved in a serious collision with a pedestrian in Brighton.

“Officers were responding to an emergency call when they collided with a man in Devonshire Place in Kemp Town at 12.50am on Friday 25 August.

“The man had sadly died at the scene.

“The road is currently closed while investigations are carried out.

“As a police car is involved, the IPCC has been informed as is usual procedure.

“Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police online quoting Operation Hertford.”

What counselling? Very assumptive that the police were at fault, lots of drunks around that area…….

The person could have been wearing headphones or was really drunk. No sensible person would attempt to cross a road if they heard a siren until they knew it was safe to do so.

You are all too fast to judge, were you there? Of course it’s tragic for the man and his family but have a thought for the police officers, no one goes to work and remotely thinks their day will end like that. We have to leave it to the IPCC to find the facts and act accordingly.

the damage to the police car is around the drivers door so the only way it makes sense to me is that he was crossing as they turned into the road? I would be interested to know what emergency they were attending but such little information has been given out its no wonder people are jumping to conclusions!
