The Brighton & Hove News Music Team listen to a wide range of music. We would like to share our musical journey with you and so this week we have been enjoying…..

The Release – ‘Contrabendo’ by Calvin Russell (Selected Video)

My choice this week is Calvin Russell’s, 2010 album ‘Contrabendo Live’, with the best track being ‘Soldier’ so much feeling and relevance to today.

The Release – ‘See Nothing Hear Nothing Say Nothing’ by Discharge (Selected Video)

Like many I fell out of love with Discharge when they flirted with heavy metal, but on seeing them play live for the first time in 36 years at the weekend they rekindled my faith in them and all that they stand for. As an added bonus they played seven tracks from this album.

The Release – ‘King Of Conflict’ by The Virginmarys (Selected Video)

First heard The Virginmarys ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ around 4 years ago on YouTube and had to dig out the ‘King Of Conflict’ album and was not disappointed. Favourites are the aforementioned opener ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’, ‘ Bang Bang Bang’, ‘Lost Weekend’ and ‘Just A Ride’. I really don’t understand how this band aren’t huge by now. This is a classic rock album that deserves repeated listens.

The Release – ‘Stay Rad!’ by Teenage Bottlerocket (Selected Video)

‘Stay Rad!’ by Teenage Bottlerocket. Umpteenth album by Wyoming’s Ramones but as always irresistibly boisterous fun

Team Member – Guy Ramone

The Release – ‘Ramones’ by Ramones (Selected Video)

Every one a gem!

The Release – ‘Loaded Gun’ by Little Triggers (Selected Video)

Caught up with Little Triggers when they came back to Brighton. Their music is modern and they describe themselves as Purveyors of The New Rock n Roll – yep, agreed! But there is a twist to their sound, it has an almost vintage 70’s rock sound at times. What you have here trapped in the vinyl grooves is one helluva rock and roll band. And this band is one of the best outfits I have seen this year. After the gig I wanted more! One of my favourite tracks from these guys is the opener for the new album is ‘Giving Me Up’ – that’s a track you have to hear!

Team Member – Jan Hinchy

The Release – ‘Original Soundtrack: Christiane F. Wir Kinder Von Bahnhof Zoo’ by David Bowie (Selected Video)

Great film. And I bought and listened to it again on CD because it has the German version ‘Heroes/Helden’ on it.

Team Member – Karl Smith

The Release – ‘Humanz’ (deluxe edition) by Gorillaz (Selected Video)

What a unique and interesting album, a couple of years old now. From the sounds, music and artists who range from De La Soul, Grace Jones and Rag’n’Bone Man who is on the deluxe version, but someone told me this week there’s a super deluxe version! Which features Little Simz, whhaattt how did I miss that. Such a great listen.

The Release – ‘Tommy’ by The Who (Selected Video)

A groundbreaking record, though arguably not the first concept album. It still sounds fresh today, even though it’s 50 years old!!!

Team Member – Mark Kite

The Release – ‘Soberphobia’ by Peter and the Test Tube Babies (Selected Video)

I love most albums this brilliant band have made, but one of their finest tracks and a personal favourite of mine is ‘Spirit of Keith Moon’. The album itself is great and I have played it loud twice this week. It also contains ‘Allergic To Life’ and ‘Key To The City’. This band are awesome live and back in Brighton and Lewes before too long. Give this a spin and make sure you catch the lyrics too.

The Release – ‘Chilled Ibiza’ by Various Artists (Selected Video)

My favourite collection of chill-out choons, described as the ultimate sunset mix, this is one for the beach before dusk.

Team Member – Michael Hundertmark

The Release – ‘Polygondwanaland’ by King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard (Selected Video)

Perfect for the festival season, Australian Psychedelia meets surf rock guitars with all the weirdness thrown in with a stage performance to match.

Team Member – Nick Linazasoro

The Release – ‘The Destroyer – Part One’ by TR/ST (Selected Video)

I’ve waited five years for this third album outing by the dark electropop Toronto artist Robert Alfons aka TR/ST and I can assure you that it has been worth the wait. Be warned if you check this album out or his previous two ‘TRST’ and ‘Joyland’ then they are all growers and will refuse to leave your deck, player, ipod etc. You have been warned!

The Release – ‘Glam Slam’ by Various Artists (Selected Video)

Picked up ‘Glam Slam’ in our local 2nd hand record shop on Saturday – I grew up during the glam rock period and it had been lacking from my collection; now duly updated with this double vinyl including all the glam classics.

Team Member – Rachel Griffin

The Release – ‘Turn Off the News (Build a Garden)’ by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real (Selected Video)

I’ve been listening to Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’s new album this week…
‘Turn Off the News (Build a Garden)’. Following their crazily good and rocky show at O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on the 27th June. Favourite tracks are the title track, ‘Civilized Hell’ and ‘Stars Made Of You’. Love his voice and guitar playing.

Team Member – Richie Nice

The Release – ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ by Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile (Selected Video)

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile: ‘Lotta Sea Lice’. Beautifully languid music for drowsy summer days.

Team Member – Ross Harper

The Mix – ‘Chikyu-u Podcast #18’ by Delasflores (Selected Video)

“Spanish DJ & producer who has recently made the UK south coast her home. With a sound referencing House, Disco & Techno; encompassing broken rhythms & abstract compositions, always aims to bring a high level of energy to the dance”

Team Member – Sara-Louise Bowrey

The Release – ‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’ by Dead Kennedys (Selected Video)

Fighting Glastonbury blues listening to playlists from previous years and currently listening to Dead Kennedys: ‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’ – absolute classic.
