Labour told to stop handing out controversial Albion leaflets

Labour’s Brighton Pavilion candidate ran into trouble with Brighton and Hove Albion when a leaflet suggesting the club supported her party was handed out to fans.

The first page of the leaflet

Nancy Platts’ supporters gave out the leaflets proclaiming “Support Albion! Support Labour!” at the Withdean Stadium before the team’s game against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

It also quoted club chief executive Martin Perry as saying: “Labour has been steadfast and unwavering in its support from day one.”

But when the club became aware of the leaflet, they asked the Labour supporters to stop handing them out.

The episode provoked a fierce debate on North Stand Chat, with most posters outraged at Labour’s tactics.

Chicken run said: “I hope the club do take them to task and this bites them very hard back, idiots.”

But supaseagull countered: “They won’t though, because the Tories and the Lib Dems have never given a toss about the Albion when we needed them to.”

A club spokesman said: “”The leaflets being handed out were not factually incorrect, but the important thing our supporters must bear in mind is that all four key candidates in that constituency, Conservative, Green, Lib Dem and Labour, are all supporters of the Albion and our new stadium.

“With this in mind the Labour supporters outside Withdean were asked not to distribute leaflets at the ground and they withdrew.

“All parties have supported the new stadium. The club does not endorse any candidate or party in the forthcoming general election. We would also hope none of the other parties use this situation for political gain.”

At the time of publication, Nancy Platts had not responded to a request for comment.
