Man in court over £3k Pride street party fund theft

A man has been charged with stealing almost £3,000 from the Village Street Party fund last year.

Ben Davie, 33, of Marine Parade, Brighton, is accused of taking funds from the annual street party in St James’s Street, a loss which threatened to put this year’s event at risk.

He will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 7 June to face two charges of theft, one of £700 and one of £2013.64.

Meanwhile, this year’s event, Britain’s largest free LBGT street party, is now set to go ahead after being given the green light from Brighton and Hove City Council.

A new committee chaired by Michael Condon, of the Aquarium Theatre Bar, has appointed Triptych Events to manage the party again.

A spokesman said: “St James’s Street and a number of the roads off it will close during the evening of Saturday 7 August and the afternoon and early evening of Sunday 8 August, providing a safe environment in which Pride Festival revellers can continue their celebrations.

He added: “The costs to ensure all this is in place are considerable.

“The budget is currently being finalised and local businesses that have the opportunity to benefit financially from the event will be invited to donate towards the running costs.”

UPDATE Since this report was published Davie pleaded guilty when he appeared before Brighton magistrates. He was sentenced to carry out 160 hours of community service and to repay the stolen money.
