Beach steps to close for four weeks over summer holidays

Public meeting to give update on Madeira Terrace works

The steps which lead from Kemptown to the beach are to be closed for two two-week periods over the summer holidays while work continues to restore Madeira Terrace.

The closure was originally slated to last two months, from this week until 5 September – but that period has now been cut back to 25 July to 8 August and then 20 August to 3 September.

The steps need to be closed to build piles, part of the foundations of the restored terrace.

Councillor Julie Cattell, lead member for major projects, said: “This is a significant restoration project and one of the most ambitious and technical this council has ever undertaken.

“While we would love to maintain access to these steps throughout, unfortunately the nature and location of some of this highly specialist work means that is not possible.

“When we do have to close the Royal Crescent steps, access to the beach will remain either side of the site, but I do appreciate the temporary closure of the steps will impact residents.

“It had looked like these steps would need to be closed for a longer period, but we have looked at the piling and foundation works in this corner and worked with our contractors to re-order a few things to keep the steps open as much as possible

“As a result, the steps are now scheduled to close on 25 July and reopen on 8 August and then close again on 20 August and reopen on 3 September.

“If that needs to change, we will let residents know well in advance, but we’re keen to keep the steps open as much as possible, particularly during the busy summer months.

“The scale of this restoration means there will be times when it inconveniences residents and visitors, but I am confident when the work is finished and people can see the end result they’ll agree that the temporary disruption was worth it to help restore this area of our seafront to its former glories.”

The specific work being undertaken during the closure of the steps is:

  • Removal of concrete obstructions from pile line.
  • Construction of pile platform.
  • Installation of column piles and lift pit piles in this area.
  • Construction of column support beam at the western end to incorporate bay 87 pile

Get Peddle People involved to support those who cant walk far and want to come to the beach . Pedal People could meet folk at Madeira Terrace lift and follow a circular route down to the seafront.
If not Pedal People then community buses to run a shuttle service between the estates and the Kemptown seafront.

I don’t imagine they want to be doing this sort of work in winter also there are problems with concrete in the cold.

The foundational piling requires specific conditions and cannot be safely done in winter or piecemeal, Mikey.
