A Brighton teacher found out she had been named the best in the country during a surprise visit from the BBC.
Jolie Bartley, head of performing arts at Varndean School, has been declared the winner of teacher of the year in a secondary school in this year’s National Teaching Awards.
She was told the news by West End star Jodie Prenger, who visited the school during rehearsals for its production of the musical School of Rock.
The star of the film version Jack Black also recorded a special video message for her.
That clip, plus footage of the visit to the school were aired on The One Show last night.
The award will be officially presented to her this weekend.
Shelley Baker, Headteacher at Varndean School said, “Jolie exemplifies care, dedication, and an inspiring approach to teaching that ensures every student feels they belong.
“Many students benefit from her innovative and inclusive methods, which not only foster academic growth but also nurture confidence and community spirit.
“Her inspiration reaches far beyond the immediate community, as she inspires students and offers support to colleagues across local schools through her work with TTSA (Thrive Together Schools Alliance).
“We are incredibly lucky to have a teacher whose passion and commitment make such a lasting difference to so many young lives.”
The awards ceremony will be held at The Brewery on Saturday, hosted by Gaby Roslin and featuring special guests including education secretary Bridget Phillipson.

“These awards are a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact great educators have, because the path to national renewal runs through our schools.
