A Brighton pub is to close today (Saturday 15 August), according to a post on its Facebook page yesterday.
The post said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the New Unity will be closing its doors this Saturday.
“What an incredible journey it’s been. We’ve shared unforgettable nights, amazing music, laughter, friendships and memories that will stay with us forever.
“A huge thank you to every single customer who walked through our doors and helped create the incredible atmosphere and vibes that made the New Unity so special.
“Thank you to all the event organisers who brought their passion and creativity and to every band and DJ who filled our venue with unforgettable performances.
“This may be the end of a chapter but the memories we’ve made together will last a lifetime.
“Join us this Saturday as we say one final goodbye.
“From all of us at the New Unity – thank you.
“PS The doors won’t be closed forever. The pub will be having a refurbishment due. A new concept will be put in place.
“More information will be announced in the near future.”
The New Unity, formerly the Branch Tavern, is run by the Laine pub company. Its closure follows hard in the heels of the announcement of two other venue closures.
In the past few weeks, the Charles Street Tap and R-Bar have both announced that they are also shutting up shop, prompting concerns about the health of the hospitality sector.
Last month, the new Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that business rates would be cut for pubs, social clubs and live music venues – but hopes of a VAT cut were dashed.
