Making The Masked Singer launched this week at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, and we were amazed by the detail, creativity and bold designs on display.

The exhibition is beautifully displayed in the museum’s costume gallery and celebrates the work and ingenuity of Plunge Creations, a Sussex-based business behind each unique work of art. As we entered the space, the vivid colours drew us in. We’d seen the costumes on TV before, shouted along with the audience for them to ‘Take It Off’, and knew who had inhabited each one, but seeing them assembled up close was a completely new experience.

Each creation is posed on a mannequin to capture the essence of the performance it once belonged to, making them look as if they are about to step onto the stage and move, but here we were allowed to stand, stare, and really take them in. Standout displays included the dragon worn by Sue Perkins, the giant Joel Dommett worn by Mo Farrah, and the snail worn by Andrea Corr, but each one brought a smile, a nod of recognition, and a detail we hadn’t noticed before.

The exhibition is well thought out, with interactive activities and clear signage. We were invited to take photos with giant heads, design and colour our own costumes to add to the display, and mix and match large magnetic boards to create a whole new character. The information also gave an insight into the processes used, the time spent on each outfit and the practicalities of putting on a show with so much ambition.

Brighton Museum has an amazing collection of costumes, including a wide selection of surrealist art and design. This exhibition fits perfectly into their approach, celebrating the achievements of our local art community and the success of a small business we may never have heard of, but one that operates out of Portslade Village and has achieved international acclaim. With eight series of The Masked Singer already broadcast, a huge following, and celebrities willing to put themselves out there for pure entertainment, we can see why this exhibition will be a great success for the museum.

Making the Masked Singer is on display at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in Church Street, Brighton from 24 October 2026 to 6 June 2027.

Information on how to visit the show is available on the Museum’s website.
