Stanmer squatters face eviction

Squatters and a charity trust are squaring up in Stanmer, with the trustees winning an eviction order at Brighton County Court today.

Present and former Sussex University students are among a group to have set up a squat in a council-owned farmhouse in Stanmer Park.

The property is managed by the Brighton and Hove Estates Conservation Trust, which is a charity that was set up by the council to run the cottages and farmhouse.

The Badger online – published by students based at the university’s Falmer campus – reports that the property has been occupied for three weeks.

Tenants had been living in the 18th century building until shortly before then.

Councillor Gill Mitchell is leader of the opposition Labour group on Brighton and Hove City Council and chairman of the trust which manages the property.

She said: “The Brighton and Hove Estates Conservation Trust is currently taking legal action to regain possession of the property so that it can be relet to local people in accordance with the trust’s policy.

“A possession order has been granted.”

The Badger reports that the squatters have posted a notice on the front door of the house asserting their legal rights.

The notice says that they will prosecute anyone who tries to enter by force.

But with a court order having been granted, bailiffs are expected to evict the squatters in the coming few days.

iin situations where a home which is in use is violated.then of course common sences dictates minimize stress to injured party,100million to put houses back in use is a start.however for want of a better phrase an honor amongst theives code should be somewhat tolerated till our housing feasco is adressed.as in squatters shouldnt break into ur nans.we need to join hands on this, labour conservative, brick layer and hippy.anyone can make a mistake.mrs t said sell the working mans home and let them eat cake.fluff the cake give them homes, steer away from madness rent caps will create ghettos.we need affordable homes for everyone, everyone is a key worker, the man selling the news paper.the man stacking the shelves.its not very blitz spirit to stand on a pedistal screaming off with their heads im alright jack .we hav just witnessed horendous rioting across this country.i think its insanity to suggest we offically create 70000 criminals,85000 is approx prision capasity.due to funds clearing late to my account i arrived in brighton yrs ago in febuary nad couldnt get a hotel till 6am.it can happen, brighton fever had to visit.had to stay on sea front i was ill for weeks.i cant agree with off with heads by any mp till you show us how its done.i dont agree with trashing houses ,one bad apple…i think if a dog were to freeze on the street,it would be put down.squats need to be self disiplined as in there needs to be someone in charge.kicking 30 squatters onto the street is asking to up the crime rate,if people face freezing to death then unfortunatly they will break into buildings legal or not.to prevent chaos if we appoint persons in charge of buildings we can prevent urinating in the hallways and anarchy in these buildings.same with any social experiment, hicups and teething troubles put on the whole,if we hav someone available to offer guidelines does and donts who is respectfull to people.i for one would be interested to give this a try.currently unemployed i would be more thann happy to offer my services in such a venture
