Brighton skating rink to open next month

Work is expected to start on a new ice rink for Brighton this month, with skating expected to start on Saturday 13 November.

The temporary ice rink will hold up to 200 skaters at a time in the grounds of the Royal Pavilion.

Permission to build the rink was granted by Brighton and Hove City council today.

The rink will occupy a site in the Pavilion Gardens until late January when it has to be removed.

The annual public skating sessions at the Brighton Centre are also scheduled to run during the Christmas holidays.

The Get Your Skates On sessions are due to start on Monday 20 December and end on Thursday 6 January.

The council said that the temporary rink at the Pavilion would create about 130 mainly part-time jobs.

These will mostly be for skating marshals and staff to handle skate loans.

Eleven catering staff would also be needed.

A viewing area will enable the public to watch the skating and, given the backdrop, is expected to be a popular spot for taking photographs.

A similar scheme was given permission last year but did not go ahead as the organiser ran out of time.

Councillor Lynda Hyde, chairman of the council’s planning committee, said: “We’ve put in strict conditions to ensure the temporary buildings are removed and the grounds perfectly reinstated.

“There are also measures to control noise, opening hours, trees and the Pavilion itself.

“I feel this will be a very popular attraction, helping bring people to the city at a key time for our traders.

“It also provides us with an income to help maintain the Royal Pavilion.

“Generally it’s felt the advantages outweigh the disadvantage of the Pavilion being slightly obscured from view for a while.”

The operator plans to open the rink from 10am to 10.15pm.

Up to 200 people can skate during a session, with ten sessions scheduled each day.
