Children of a newly refurbished Westdene nursery helped to paint the freshly plastered walls this week.
The refurbishment at Friends First, which includes improving the outside area and installing an accessible toilet, was made possible through an Early Years Capital Grant.
The building, which was a former parks store housing equipment such as lawnmowers and tractors, had boarded up windows with few outdoors views for the children.
Internal walls have been demolished to improve and open out play areas for children and running hot water has also been installed.
The nursery, which used to be called Westdene Preschool, has 20 children a day but is used by many more each week.
Work on the building, which is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council and leased to the group, started in July and is due for completion next month.
While this work is carried out the group has been relocated to a mobile unit.
The children have been invited by the building contractor, Westridge Construction, to get involved with the refurbishment helped paint internal walls..
The deputy mayor, Councillor Ann Norman, said: “This nursery was in real need of refurbishment.
“Children will now enjoy state of the art facilities in a bright and airy environment that now has lower level windows so children will be able to see outside into the play area.
“Local parents will be able to take advantage of a much improved nursery.”
