Two thousand join Stop the Cuts demo in Brighton

About 2,000 people took to the streets to protest about government spending cuts yesterday, according to Brighton Trades Council.

The leading banner, saying “We need a Bright Start”, referred to the threat of closure hanging over the council-run Bright Start Nursery in the North Laine.

Workers, parents and children from the nursery helped lead the protest march from The Level up Trafalgar Street and down Queen’s Road and North Street to Victoria Gardens.

The demo was organised by the Stop the Cuts Coalition, which is supported by the Brighton, Hove and District Trades Union Council – also known as the Brighton Trades Council.

The Stop the Cuts Coalition said that the government was using the financial crisis as an excuse to attack the public sector and open it up for even more privatization.

It said that the drive for cuts was ideological, adding: “The cuts will most likely make the deficit worse and will without doubt have a devastating impact on the people of our city.”

A meeting is being held to start organising local anti-cuts groups for all part s of Brighton and Hove.

The meeting is due to start at 7.30pm next Monday (8 November) at the Brighthelm Centre in North Road, Brighton.
