Residents are reportedly trying to stop travellers setting up camps in Stanmer Park and Carden Park today (Friday 5 September).

Caravans began to arrive at Stanmer Park this morning, and it is believed five are currently at the back of the park where at least one resident is trying to stop more entering.

Posting on the Sussex Traveller Movements and News Updates Facebook group, one resident said: “Five caravans have entered Stanmer Park at the back.

“Can more people get to the main gates of Stanmer Park to help stop more entering the park, there is already one person there at moment but she needs back up urgently please.”

The council’s website said: “Travellers began to arrive at Stanmer Park earlier today. We have visited the site with the police and are currently assessing the situation.”

Brighton and Hove News understands that more travellers attempted to enter Carden Park this afternoon but were stopped by a resident blocking their way.

Posting on the same Facebook group at about 1pm, another resident said: “There are travellers trying to get on Carden Park. A car’s blocking their entry and the police are trying to find them. They went off up Carden Avenue 20 minutes ago.”

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of travellers in the Carden Avenue and Stanmer Park areas. A small group of travellers have arrived in Stanmer Park and an assessment visit will be made by police and council.”

Another travellers’ camp is currently at Surrenden Field. The council website says of this encampment: “The travellers have been asked to leave. Officers are instructing the council’s legal team to seek possession of the land, should the travellers fail to leave the site voluntarily.”
