Former Whitehawk footballer to face match-fixing trial next year

Former Whitehawk FC footballer Moses Swaibu has been told that he will go on trial charged with match-fixing in April next year.

Swaibu, 25, of Tooley Street, in Bermondsey, London, appeared before Judge Melbourne Inman at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday (Friday 19 September).

He is accused of conspiring to commit bribery and was arrested after an investigation by the National Crime Agency. Swaibu’s trial is scheduled to start on Monday 13 April.

The former Bolton Wanderers striker Delroy Facey, 34, from Huddersfield, appeared in court alongside Swaibu yesterday.

He is also accused of conspiring to commit bribery having been charged earlier this month after a National Crime Agency inquiry.

In June former Whitehawk player Michael Boateng, 23, of Davidson Road, Croydon, was jailed for 16 months for his role in a match-fixing plot.

Another ex-Whitehawk footballer, Hakeem Adelakun, 23, of Mayfield Crescent, Thornton Heath, was cleared of bribery by the same jury.

The players are no longer with the East Brighton club and it is not suggested that any Whitehawk matches were affected.

In the same case two Singaporean men, Krishna Ganeshan and Chann Sankaran, were both sent to prison for five years by Judge Melbourne Inman at Birmingham Crown Court.

They were accused of trying to rig matches on behalf of a betting syndicate.
