Brighton MP raises concerns over closure of doctors’ surgery

The Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown Simon Kirby has raised concerns about the impending closure of a doctors’ surgery in his constituency.

Mr Kirby has written to the interim director of NHS England in Surrey and Sussex, Sarah Creamer, about the future of the Eaton Place surgery in Kemp Town.

The two doctors at the practice, Dr Malcolm Stalker and Dr Robert Mockett, have written to NHS England to give notice that they intend to retire early next year.

The practice, which has more than 5,000 patients, is due to close on Saturday 28 February next year.

Mr Kirby said: “Constituents are understandably concerned at what this will mean for them when the current practice closes.

“I have been in contact with NHS England who I know are working at pace to find a solution but I have stressed to them the urgency of the situation and pressed them to do everything possible to continue offering a GP service in the area.”

In a letter to the Kemptown MP, Ms Creamer told Mr Kirby that “NHS England is continuing to explore all potential options in order to determine which will deliver the best outcome for affected patients”.

If there are 5,000 patients what would happen if there was a large outbreak of flu or suchlike, surely 2 Doctors wouldn’t be able to cope anyway. Is there some sort of criteria where Doctors are only allowed to have so many patients?
