Brighton and Hove councillors put latest 20mph speed limit plans on hold

Brighton and Hove councillors put latest 20mph speed limit plans on hold

Plans to bring in 20mph speed limits in Hangleton, Mile Oak, Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Woodingdean and the Medina Terrace area of Hove have been put on hold.

Members of Brighton and Hove City Council voted to defer a discussion of phase 3 of the programme until the new year.

Some councillors said before a meeting of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee that a report on the proposed new 20mph zones was flawed.

The committee received a petition with 280 signatures from Phillipa Sen, a mother who lives in Holmes Avenue, Hove.

The petition said: “We the undersigned petition Brighton and Hove Council to reduce the speed limit in Holmes Avenue in Hove to 20 mph at the next phase 3 consultation as there is a school on the same street and many people driving dangerously.”

Mrs Sen said: “Holmes Avenue is often used as a short cut for traffic going to and from Old Shoreham Road, Hangleton Road and the A27 with traffic frequently going beyond the current 30mph speed limit.

“Lots of school children use the pavement and cross the road en route to school given Blatchington Mill, Hove Park, Goldstone, West Hove schools and two nurseries are within walking distance.

“A 20mph limit is likely to limit the chances of an accident occurring, including a fatality or serious injury.

“As you will see from the signed petition many residents and students from Blatchington Mill School in particular have said that they often dodge vehicles and have to run fast to get to the other side of the road safely.

“Two students have said they were nearly hit and one boy said he had been clipped by a car but lived, thankfully, to tell the tale.

“Quite a few residents said they have lost their animals on this road due to people driving at excessive speeds.

“It was only his morning that sadly I witnessed a family cat run over.

“Residents would like a safe place to cross on this road near Blatchington Mill School and at the intersection of Holmes Avenue and Nevill Avenue.

“We would like to see a zebra crossing with an island and flashing beacons.”

She also called for a one-way system to be put in place around the windmill.

The petition was received when the committee met at Hove Town Hall this afternoon (Tuesday 25 November).

The 20mph proposals are now due to be discussed when the committee next meets on Tuesday 20 January.
