5 things we noticed as Brighton & Hove Albion beat Leeds United … again

By Tim Hodges – Albion reporter

1) David Stockdale and Chris Wood both kicking the same goal post in frustration. Leeds-born Stockdale chipped at the paint after allowing Liam Cooper to equalise. Former Seagulls loanee Wood whacked the frame of the goal with his boot after guiding his free header wide from eight yards out.

2) Uwe Rosler less than politely asking the assistant referee to “go away” as the lino tried to intervene when the Leeds boss gave an impromtu team talk during a water break.

3) It was Albion’s fourth straight victory against Leeds. Even though the Peacocks have previously featured in the Champions League final and semi-finals. The Seagulls are fast becoming Leeds’ bogey team – a little like Arsenal were to the Albion in the 1980s.

4) Albion go four points clear at the top of the Championship – now longest period they have led the Football League in their history. The club are now on an 11-match unbeaten run in the league. They cannot be overhauled until at least next Saturday (24 October) against Preston and have the possibility of another 1st v 2nd clash when they take on Reading on the last day of the month – the third such game this season.

5) And of course Bobby Zamora’s first goal since his penalty against Grimsby Town on Sunday 4 May 2003 in the Championship (then Division 1). And his first in open play since since his strike against Watford on the Saturday 26 April 2003 at Withdean. To give some perspective, Watford are currently 14th in the Premier League and Grimsby Town are fourth in the National League, the top tier of non-league football. Paul Kitson, Zamora’s strike partner in those matches, is now 44. And Dave Beasant, Albion’s goalkeeper at the time, is now 56 although he was selected as a substitute for Stevenage Town in May 2015. The pair may be reunited at the Madjeski Stadium in two weeks time. Beasant is now Reading’s goalkeeping coach.
