Experts hold ‘work fair’ in Brighton to help the recently homeless find jobs and courses

A “work and learning fair” is being held in Brighton to help people who were homeless to find jobs or courses and get their lives back on track.

The event is taking place for the third year running and is targeted at those living in specialist supported housing with the aim of preparing them for the world of work.

The Getting Ready for Work 2016 work and learning fair has been organised by members of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Work and Learning Working Group.

The working group brings together local experts in tackling homelessness and many of the complex problems that people often have by the time they end up without a home.

The fair is intended to give people who have been homeless a chance to meet and chat to a wide range of people who can help them.

Men and women who currently live in places such as hostels will be given advice about what is available to help them find jobs or work experience or training.

Among the organisations expected to send staff are Albion in the Community, Job Centre Plus, National Careers Service, City College Brighton and Hove, Swim UK and NACRO.

The event will take place at 11am on Thursday 7 April at the Friends’ Meeting House in Ship Street, Brighton.

Rachel Ballard, from Brighton YMCA, said: “It’s an excellent opportunity for clients to find their own opportunities and resources.

“It’s also a great chance for support workers to find out about what is available locally.

“There will be stalls and one-to-one support for clients interested in gaining skills for work.

“The event is designed to work well for people who just want to find out what’s available as well as those who want to sign up to courses, programmes and activities on the day.”

Bernadette Lynch, from Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), said: “The event will be relaxed and informal. There is nothing else like this in the city and it’s a great opportunity for clients to get involved in work and learning.

“Helping people to know what is available and to help them build their confidence are important first steps on the journey to employment.”

The event is supported by the BHT Accommodation for Work Project, which is funded by the Big Lottery, and with bus tickets for participants from the council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
