A Hove school has won an international art and poetry prize, seeing off competition from more than 2,000 children from places such as Kenya, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.
Pupils from Hangleton Primary School were awarded the Jonny Lambert Personal Choice Award in a competition staged at the Natural History Museum, in London.
The competition, which has been running since 2004, was organised by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.
The theme for the competition was “wild wonders”. The Hangleton entry included art and poetry which was displayed on postcard-sized paper and combined to create a blanket which covered a 3D sculpture of the earth.
Hangleton teacher Kathy Williams said: “We all had a great day at the Natural History Museum and winning the award was the icing on the cake.”
Children’s illustrator Jonny Lambert, who has more than 300 titles to his name, was a guest speaker and judge at the event. He shared the story of what inspired his art and how we can all improve our own.
He loved the Hangleton entry, saying that it took him back to his school days. He said: “I just loved the idea of creating a blanket of art and poetry to protect the world.”
The award comes with a selection of children’s books from the publisher Little Tiger Press.
