Southern advises people coming to Brighton Pride to think about alternatives to the train

Flooding delays journey home for Brighton and Hove commuters

Train operator Southern has advised people coming to Brighton Pride to consider alternative means of transport on Saturday (6 August).

The company said: “Reduced train service will mean very busy trains.

“Preston Park station will be closed for the safety of passengers and staff.”

And the company added that a queuing system at Brighton Station would mean long waiting times.

Southern blamed the continuing industrial dispute with the RMT union for the anticipated problems. A reduced timetable is in operation at the moment.

It said that train crew shortages meant that some services may have to be cancelled and added: “There will be a reduced service over the weekend to and from Brighton meaning very busy trains.

“Given the large attendance expected at Pride, as usual there will be a queuing system in place at Brighton Station for return journeys – and the closure of Preston Park Station and the continuing engineering works at London Bridge mean that customers should expect long waiting times before they can board a train home.”

Southern’s Brighton area manager Paul Wyborn said: “The industrial action and the dispute with the RMT is continuing to cause misery to people’s lives.

“For our part, we’re sorry that we are unable to provide a full service that meets our passengers’ expectations.

“We’ll do the best we can with the resources we have available but the trains that do run will be exceptionally busy.

“That’s why we are regrettably advising people to try to find another way of getting in and out of Brighton to beat the crowds and unavoidable queues.”

The queuing system at Brighton Station will be in place from 6am and customers will be allowed on to the platforms on a first-come-first-served basis as space allows.

Southern added: “Passengers who have no alternative but to travel by train should check before they travel at nationalrail.co.uk.”
