Registered carers in the city can now enjoy discounted bus travel – thanks to Brighton and Hove Buses forming a new partnership with two local authority schemes.

Carers who are part of either the Brighton & Hove City Council Carers’ Card or the Compass Card, run by Brighton-based charity Amaze and funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and West Sussex County Council, are eligible to qualify for discounted bus travel.

Since the scheme launched last month, more than 50 registered carers have applied for discounted bus travel.

Brighton & Hove Buses Managing Director Martin Harris said: “The work carried out by carers to support those who need that bit of extra help – whether they are disabled or suffering a long-term illness for instance – is hugely valued by many in the city.

“We want to show our support for the brilliant work they do by offering financial help with bus travel, especially as many are volunteers or on low incomes.”

Amaze manager Ann Blackburn said: “The bus company’s offer is a valuable addition to the Carers’ Card and Compass Card schemes. Bus travel is an essential part of city life and the discount makes a significant difference to the caring community and to the families we work with.”

Parent carer Sonya Pettigrew, who recently signed up for the discount, said: “I use Brighton & Hove Buses all the time, so this Carers’ Card discount makes a real difference.

“The One Stop Travel shop staff were wonderful when I went in to get my Keycard and made it really simple and straightforward”.

Chris Lau, director of The Carers Centre (Brighton & Hove) said: “Most carers are on low income or in financial hardship. Unable to go out because of the transport costs is quite common, particularly for those carers living outside the town centre. I am delighted that Brighton & Hove Buses has joined the Carers Card Scheme to support unpaid carers. We are hoping this will encourage more local companies to join the scheme.”
