Health commissioners have praised the progress found at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton by an official inspection team from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The CQC rated Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals as “requires improvement” – one grade better than the inadequate rating it received a year ago.
The trust remains in “special measures” and has a new management team in charge.
The progress was lauded by the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which was itself recently rated good, having been graded inadequate last year.
CCG clinical chair David Supple said: “We recognise the significant improvements that have been made at the trust and this is testament to the hard work and commitment of all the staff towards the care of their patients.
“It is also a reflection of the large amount of work that has taken place across the local health system to ensure that the acute hospital can provide better care for patients.
“We know the trust still has more work to do to get to where they want to be and we will continue to work closely with them to help maintain their progress.”
Dr Supple added: “We have been very impressed by the new leadership team at the trust and we feel confident the trust will be able to build on what they have already achieved and continue the journey of improvement they have started.”
