A Brighton developer has pledged £25,000 towards the crowdfunding campaign to kickstart the regeneration of the Madeira Terraces.

U+I, which is building hundreds of homes on the site of the old fruit and veg market in Circus Street, Brighton, pledged the money yesterday (Thursday 10 August).

It took the tally to more than £140,000 with more than 500 donations already offered as Brighton and Hove City Council looks to raise an initial £430,000.

U+I deputy chief executive Richard Upton said: “For us, understanding the heritage and the fine grain of a place is essential and it is great to see so many people getting behind this important campaign to preserve these iconic arches.

“We wish the crowd funding campaign every success.”

To donate, go to www.spacehive.com/madeira-terrace.

The campaign has 112 days to run and, in part, is about demonstrating public support for the restoration plans before the council seeks government funding or lottery money.

A previous application for financial help to the government’s Coastal Communities Fund was turned down.

Work has started on piling at the Circus Street site so that the project can move from the demolition phase to construction.
