Ophelia plunges Brighton into orange gloom

Brighton has been bathed in a twilight glow as the tail of Hurricane Ophelia approaches our shores.

By Robb Banks/Brighton Skies

The ex-hurricane storm drew Saharan dust north to the UK, making the sun appear red over parts of the UK this morning.

Met Office forecaster Grahame Madge said: “Air is being pulled from southern Europe and Africa and that air contains a lot of dust.

“So it’s most likely the appearance of sunset at midday is caused by the particles scattering the light and giving the appearance of a red sun.

“It’s certainly spectacular at the moment and quite a talking point, we’ve had a lot of calls about it.”

Street lights have come on as light sensors react to the dim conditions, and birds are not quite sure what to make of it all.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s Public Health Resilience team said: “There are no health implications – the dust is thousands of feet up in the atmosphere.”

We were shopping at Brighton and the sun was red and it got very dark. Thought it was the end of the world. Thank God it was not.

Seen that in other parts of the world but that had me worried with all the street lights on at 15 .05 this afternoon,
