Royal Pavilion set to encourage events in its grounds

The Royal Pavilion Gardens could be marketed for private events to raise money for Brighton and Hove City Council.

While the grounds have been used in the past, there has been no clear policy on how best to do this.

Now a strategy is set to be drawn up to examine how the gardens, in particular the eastern lawn by the Old Steine, could be used for more events while preserving the historical character of the venue.

This will include looking at how to offer joint use of the Royal Pavilion rooms and the grounds – and whether it’s possible to stage major events there.

In her report to this afternoon’s Culture, Recreation and Tourism Overview and Scrutiny Committee, officer Janita Bagshawe says there is an opportunity to achieve: “significant income-generating events that re-establish the tradition of cultural entertainments on the main East lawn while, with careful siting and control, retaining much of the open façade as the principal vista for city visitors arriving along the A23.”

However, she says careful attention should be paid to ensuring this complements the “internationally-iconic site”.

Any plan should allow for the extra maintenance more frequent events will require, she adds.
