Free ID verification service for EU citizens available at Brighton Town Hall

A year on from the referendum, firms face a dull uncertainty

Brighton and Hove City Council is launching a free identity checking service at Brighton Town Hall to help EU citizens complete their EU Settlement Scheme application.

EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland citizens need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if they want to continue living in the UK. The deadline for applying is 30 June 2021, or 31 December 2020 if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

While most of the application can be done on any computer or device with an internet connection, the first part requires EU citizens to verify their identity using their European identity document.

You can do this by either downloading an app on a compatible Android phone or by posting your passport or ID card to the Home Office.

If you don’t have an Android phone or don’t want to send your documents in the post, you can use our drop-in ID document check service at Brighton Town Hall to have your identity documents verified. This service is free.

The drop-in service is available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30am to 12 noon and on Wednesday from 10am to 12 noon.

EU citizens have had to deal with uncertainty and anxiety since the referendum and we want to support them through this process.

Leader of the council, Nancy Platts said: “We’re proud that Brighton & Hove is a vibrant and diverse city. I want to reassure all EU citizens living in our city that Brighton and Hove is your home and you will always be welcome here.

“If you’re struggling with the application, I encourage you to use our ID checking service and reach out to the organisations who can offer additional help.”

Nancy Platts, being such a vibrant and diverse city you should be thinking and arranging this much earlier. People were traveling to Lewes and Eastbound to get their ID scanned for several month now and it was not for free as Brighton and Hove is NOT East Sussex.
