Artists and youngsters replace graffiti with mural at Brighton building site

The mural in Whitehawk

Artists and youngsters have painted a mural over graffiti at a building site in Brighton as part of a community art project.

The mural in Whitehawk

The creative clean up took place as Martin Homes builds a five-storey block of 38 flats on the site of a closed NHS clinic in Whitehawk Way.

The company said: “There are hoarding boards surrounding the construction site and there had been some inappropriate graffiti on the boards on the road side.

“People in the community didn’t like it and we wanted to do something about it so we decided to create a beautiful, colourful, vibrant piece of artwork to cover the boards so the people of Whitehawk can be happy with what their home looks like.

“We held some meetings and got in touch with a few local artists. And we worked with TDC (the Trust for Developing Communities) to get local youngsters involved too.

“Local artists, local community workers and local residents and children took part in the organising and the artwork.

“The mural is absolutely amazing and the work done by the artists was incredible.”

Martin Homes started work on the site three months ago and has already completed the underground car park.

The company said: “We’re just starting to build the frame. The development should be completed by the end of next year.”

Martin Homes is also working on a project in Buckingham Road, Brighton, on the site of the old maternity hospital.

A terrace is being converted into 14 flats and a block of 20 flats is being built on the same plot, on the corner of Upper Gloucester Road, making 34 homes in all.

And in Portland Road, Hove, the firm converted the Martello House offices into 28 flats, now called the Martello Lofts. It is now adding an extra floor to create four penthouses.

Meanwhile, the Portslade cattle tunnel mural has been vandalised, according to a neighbour.

He said that someone seems to have rubbed a rock or something similar across the surface a few weeks ago and someone has “tagged” part of it.

The mural was created to brighten up a gloomy walkway which had prone to graffiti.
