North Street is fully open to traffic again after work to repair manhole covers finished at lunchtime.
The work started on January 17, and was due to last two weeks, but overran by a couple of days.
While it was ongoing, buses were unable to travel east along North Street, and were diverted along Old Steine, King’s Road and West Street.
A council spokeswoman said: “BT has finished its work (as of this lunchtime) and the road is now open to two-way traffic and buses are back to normal.
“The reason for the over-run was that when contractors removed the old covers they found they had to repair some of the brick work inside the chambers as well.
“There are some residual works to pavements etc, but it should not mean the road is restricted again.”
