More than 25,000 bras have been placed in Brighton and Hove bra banks to raise money for a local breast cancer charity.
The Pink Dolphin Appeal is now £1,680 better off thanks to Brighton and Hove City Council’s decision to put the bright pink banks at different locations around the city.
Shortly before Christmas, it expanded the scheme by offering smaller cardboard banks for shops and offices.
“The result has been incredible,” said Deputy Council Leader Dee Simson. “We had expected a lull after the first few months, but it’s been quite the opposite, Word has spread and our bra mountain just keeps on growing – 25,200 bras in six months!”
The council runs the scheme in partnership with national textile recycling company BCR Global.
The bras are transported along with other clothing, to developing countries including Africa, Pakistan and Eastern Europe, where they will be repaired (if necessary) and sold on, providing business opportunities as well as affordable clothing.
Every bra donated earns money for local breast cancer charity The Pink Dolphin Appeal with raises money for The Park Centre for Breast Cancer in Brighton.
