13 revamped Brighton and Hove playgrounds to open this weekend

Thirteen improved play areas will be opened this weekend as part of the My Play Space project.

Local communities, including children, have been involved in designing the play areas, which have been improved with £1.1million government cash.

Openings with related activities are as follows:

Saturday, 24 April

  • Carden Park: 1-5pm (live music, barbecue, cake stall, climbing wall, story telling and more)
  • Dyke Road: 10am-12 noon (music, games, face painting)
  • Mile Oak recreation ground: 12:30pm (treasure trail)
  • Preston Park: 2-4pm (music, games, face painting, fancy dress competition “Go Blooming Wild”)
  • St Nicholas green space (southern end of Dyke Road): 2.30pm (Games, face painting, music)
  • Warrior Close (chalk pit): 11am (treasure trail)
  • Woollards Field (Maggie’s Corner): 12-3pm (Games, refreshments, face painting)

Sunday, 25 April

  • Blakers Park: 12.30pm (Samba band, free fairy cakes for children, toy swap)
  • Greenleas recreation ground: 1-2pm (Costumed Characters, fun and Games)
  • Knoll recreation ground: 2-4pm (2-2.15pm – procession from Greenleas to Knoll) ( Bouncy Castle, sideshows, stalls)
  • Queens Park: 12-3pm (Egg/treasure hunt)
  • Saunders Park: 12-3pm (Fire service coming along to fill up the pond; Playbus, face painting, football tournament)
  • William Clarke (The Patch): 1-5pm (stalls, performances and community yoga taster session)

In 2009, the Department of Children, Schools and Families awarded Brighton and Hove City Council £1.1 million to improve a number of play spaces by March 2011.

The other play areas earmarked for improvement are: Aldrington Recreation Ground; Barn Rise; Bexhill Road; East Brighton Park; Easthill Park; Coldean; Happy Valley; Hodshrove Wood; Mackie Avenue; Saltdean Oval; St Ann’s Well Gardens; Stoneham Recreation Ground; Swanborough Drive; Tarnerland; Whitehawk Play Areas.
