About 4,000 Brighton and Hove schoolchildren packed the streets of the town for the Children’s Parade yesterday to mark the start of the Brighton Festival.

Some 80 schools were represented with a fantastic variety of tableaux, floats and costumes.

The parade started at the northern end of the North Laine, with the weather holding – if a touch blowy at times.

The youngsters, their teachers, parents and supporters made their way along crowd-lined New Road and East Street to Madeira Drive accompanied by music and samba drum beats.

The Argus is publishing an 8-page souvenir picture special in the paper on Tuesday.
