A Brighton gathering of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers learnt about the death of one of their leading spokesmen yesterday.
Michael Gavin was mourned by colleagues attending the Gypsy Roma Traveller Heritage Day at the Brighthelm Centre in North Road, Brighton.
Mr Gavin, a Brighton-based Irish Traveller, died from cancer after a long illness.
He ran the southern region of GAIT – the Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller Association – and was a founder member of the Sussex Police Gypsy Traveller Advisory Group.
Chief Constable Martin Richards said: “Michael endeared himself to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and was regarded in the highest esteem.”
