A controversial author and leading environmental campaigner is due to speak at a Brighton venue this evening (Wednesday 7 September).
Mark Lynas will be talking about his provocative new book, The God Species: How the planet can survive the age of humans.
He will be taking questions, which could prove lively, at the Friends Meeting House in Ship Street, Brighton, with the event starting at 7.30pm.
Mr Lynas was a favourite of the Greens until he revised his opinions on nuclear power and genetically modified (GM) food.
He now supports both.
Certainly, his article in the New Statesman last year entitled, Why we greens keep getting it wrong, did little to endear him to the broader environmental movement.
His appearance in Brighton this evening is open to anyone, with tickets costing £7 and proceeds to the Brighton Pavilion Labour Party.
One prominent local Green who won’t be going along is Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty (@Phelimmac), who represents Brunswick and Adelaide on Brighton and Hove City Council.
He tweeted: “After his Fukushima pro-nuclear performance I won’t be paying @bhlabour to listen to 30 pieces of silver @mark_lynas.”
Cllr MacCafferty should be bothered to attend, he should join in the democratic debate
