Wetherspoons could be the latest pub to follow the buzz to Brighton’s newly revived London Road.

Brighton and Hove News understands that the pub chain is considering opening a branch in the newly rebuilt Co-op building.

It will join several pubs which have either opened or been refurbished in the past few years – not to mention new restaurants, cafes, a theatre and the Open Market.

The old department store has been demolished and replaced with housing for 350 students, with commercial units available on the ground floor.

Permission for the development, now known as Abacus, was granted on the condition the facade of the 1930s building was kept.

The first students are due to move in this week.

Well if it has similar clientele to that of the Cliftonville in Hove that will put London Rd back to where it was before these developments started.

Students all go to “Spoons” anyway, so they’ll only have to walk upstairs after closing. No different to an in-house ‘Campus’ bar really.

God….. couldn’t think of anything worse, I live near here. Thought they were trying to make London Road a nice area, this will just drag it back down again, attract more undesirables to the area….. Please no,need to get a petition going against it !!!!

Competition is good for the consumer. The small pubs will have to diversify…..food, coffees, entertainment etc. Use them or lose them?

We have a great bar just a few doors up from the Co-op building in Al Campo. Bringing wetherspoons to London road will just, as others have stated, take it back to the pre development days. There is no point in spending millions of pounds on an area only to send it huring back to the gutter with this kind of pub.
AlCampo is a great space, has a great atmosphere, great food and great staff, oh and the drinks are great too. We need to think of the other pubs in the area, how are they going to be affected with wetherspoons moving in???

Stay away wetherspoons, we have enough places to go eat and drink in the area. We do not need your kind here !!!!!!

Actually most of the students will be International and post grads and i am sure they would not welcome the noise and disturbance another large pub would cause. London Road has a number of fairly well run pubs why add another?

Wetherspoons on London Road is a shortsighted and destructive decision if it goes ahead. It will put the whole regeneration a massive step backwards and will kill a lot of already struggling traditional Brighton pubs.
Wrong wrong wrong and I can’t believe Brighton council could even consider it.
