Thirty four years ago today Brighton and Hove Albion played in what is still regarded as the biggest match in the club’s history, the 1983 FA Cup Final.
The overwhelming reaction the twin towns had then was replicated during last Sunday’s promotion parade as thousands took to the streets to cheer the team.
The infamy of Gordon Smith’s last-minute miss in that Cup Final is worldwide and the footage is played on TV and radio at least once every year.
Next season is the first time since the miss by Smith, who scored earlier in the game, that the Seagulls will have been back in the top flight of English football.
Let’s hope Albion consign the most talked about on-field event in the club’s history to the archives for good.
Gordon Smith is a guest at Albion’s 1901 Club Cup Final afternoon event, at the Amex, next Saturday. He is due to host a Q&A session post match.
