New groyne field takes shape

Coastal Protection 3 - 1

Work to widen Hove beach with a new groyne field is underway.

Timber posts have been driven into the shingle to support the groynes, which will be filled with tonnes of shingle.

This will extend the beach out to sea by about 25 metres between the King Alfred Leisure Centre and Second Avenue.

The shingle is being taken from a licensed dredging site in the English Channel.

The work is being done to stop erosion and reduce shingle washing up onto the prom.

So far, three timber groynes have been built and a fourth is being prepared.
