What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Brighton than with a favourite musical, a crowd of excited people who also love it and free-flowing drinks? Add a great compere, create a jovial atmosphere, and you’re on to a winner. All these things and more were offered up at the Komedia this weekend, and we loved every minute.

The Mystery Musicals Bottomless Brunch concept provides groups of friends with an ideal way of celebrating together. The title of the show is not revealed until your booking confirmation comes through, but it is safe to say that they will all be crowd favourites. This week, we were delighted to find our theme was Grease, so, dressed as a slightly non-conformist biker and pink lady, we headed in with the tunes already in our heads.
We were welcomed with jugs of mimosas, which were generously refilled, along with a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available for the first 90 minutes, all included in the ticket price. The menu provided a good range of options – I had the delicious chorizo hash whilst my partner opted for a tasty vegan sausage bun with crispy hash browns – all served efficiently so we could start the show well fed. The set was created by Flamingo Styling, featuring garlands, flowers, and jackets reminiscent of the famous High School dance sequence from the film. As the opening credits from the original movie started, the crowd were already singing.

The event was expertly controlled by comedian Lee Peart, the perfect person to warm up the crowd and bring us all together. He got the balance just right – a chance for people to be seen in the crowd, jokes without any malice, a healthy dose of shade and a clear love of the musical he was presenting. Throughout the event, he was in charge of the elusive golden tickets, which were awarded for best costume creations, best dancing, accurate moves and commitment to the vibe they were looking for. The award winners were then paraded before the audience, with a chance to win a great prize. Lee was there throughout – his energy built with the event, and he seemed to be having a great time himself – just what we wanted from a host.

With clips from the original movie playing on a big screen, subtitled with lyrics so everyone could join in, this show built to a crescendo where the whole audience was dancing together, forming a conga, swapping stories and ready to continue their weekend with a great story to tell. Everyone felt included, and whatever you were celebrating was a great reason to be there. If you want to gather a group of friends together for a fun afternoon, this might be just the musical jolt you need.
Future events are planned, and whilst we can’t tell you which musicals are going to be, Lee was fairly confident you might be worth taking a chance on booking the next one!
