Betwixt explores the strange, vivid terrain of being in-between — when the usual distractions fall away and we are neither here nor there. Inviting audiences to encounter the unknown as a space crackling with possibility, the dancers oscillate between quiet suspension and restless energy, revealing the tension, humour and unexpected joy that can reside inside uncertainty.

This is a world premiere. Betwixt will be promoted for national touring following its Brighton Festival run.

“I started a new course that looks at infant development. Learning experientially through observation — this process of waiting and watching — led me to consider what it means in a contemporary society to reside in a place of uncertainty, a liminal space, and what I and others might experience in response to this.”

Jason Keenan-Smith, Artistic Director, Three Score Dance

Voices from the company

“Here we are. Breathe. Focus. Enjoy.”

Penny, company member and former dance teacher of 40 years

“A constant shifting and changing of energy and mood — from joyful exuberance to intense discomfort. Revealing, poignant and deeply personal.”

Saskia, company member

“I have described Betwixt as quirky, thought-provoking and yet tender.”

Helen, company member

About Three Score Dance

Founded in 2011, Three Score Dance brings movement to life for older adults in Brighton & Hove and beyond through classes, outreach and a performance company. Under Artistic Director Jason Keenan-Smith, the company commissions new work from acclaimed choreographers including Lea Anderson, Ben Duke, Rhiannon Faith and Russell Maliphant Dance Company. Performances celebrate the beauty of age and the expression and artistry that its dancers bring to the stage.

Dame Imelda Staunton is patron of Three Score Dance.
