Take a very funny man and an absolute guitar virtuoso, put them together, and you have a partnership that has endured and grown over the years. This pair have been making us and each other laugh for a long time, and they are coming back to Brighton this October to do it all again.
Boothby Graffoe, well-known for his surreal and whimsical humour, is also a bit of a musician. His songs feature unusual ideas, usually taken a little bit further than we might go with them, ending up in a storytelling style that is very funny and totally engaging. This show, Wot Italian?, refers to the man whom he’s chosen to share his stage with.
Antonio Forcione is a magical player – a man who can use a guitar to tell a story all on its own. He uses a variety of techniques, drawing on his own Mediterranean roots and also the sounds of North Africa, Latin America and world music. He incorporates percussion into his music, using his guitar to create a variety of sounds you might not associate with it. The effect is mesmerising, and the music is delightful to listen to. This is a man completely in tune with his instrument.
So, a comedian and a musician together – does that work? We were intrigued when we first saw it in a listing for the Brighton Fringe over twenty years ago and have followed them both ever since. Together they use banter, improvisation and, most importantly, their love of music to create a show that is different every time. Together they just work!
