Preview: Glorious Ghibli family workshop

The first time I sat down to watch Ponyo with my kids, we were all hooked.
I couldn’t work out so much of the story and after about 20 minutes, I stopped trying to see any sense. Fujimoto in particular could have sparked several therapy sessions, for example.
But, Ghibli films have something in common. They are magical, and whimsical and beautifully written.
Weeks after we watched Ponyo my son would still do an impression of the little fish in the bath. Since then we have watched, repeatedly, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Earwig And The Witch and others.
I still have questions, in fact the questions only grow with each viewing, but my kids don’t – they just love it.
So obviously I was delighted to hear that Theatre Royal is hosting a Glorious Ghibli family workshop on Saturday 29 August, a morning session for children aged 6 to 11 and their grown-ups.
It’s led by artist Abigail Horn, and the whole thing is built around the world of Studio Ghibli.
The workshop takes the group into the hidden spaces around the theatre, so the children will be exploring the building as well as making things.
Children will be encouraged to build their own Ghibli-inspired objects and characters, and will be working with clay, recycled materials, fabric -anything that sparks their mood!
