Soundbaths from Nature

Immerse yourself in nature at The Old Market

Review: Soundbaths from Nature at The Old Market

This week The Old Market is hosting its inaugural week-long programme of immersive and holistic music events running from September 2nd to 8th.

I went along to the first of the soundbaths being hosted as part of the week-long event, which sees immersive music events taking place in the beautiful Old Market.

I’ve been to Soundbaths before and was keen to try the ones at The Old Market after the of Land Sea and Sky series sold out during Brighton Festival.

Entering into the dimly-lit space, I noticed bean bags scattered around the polished wood floor. I immediately put two together and snuggled in.

Looking around, I couldn’t see any of the bowls and gongs that I associated with soundbaths and then I realised this was slightly different as the sounds of nature started to float through.

“Designed for deep listening and calm reflection, these short and immersive bursts of surround sound and large-scale visuals transport you into vivid natural environments – from rolling waves and whispering forests to wind-swept skies and distant horizons: offering a moment of stillness and a chance to slow down, breathe, and be surrounded by the rhythms of nature,” the note, that I glanced at two months ago when booking, read.

But as well as being a soundbath it was also accompanied by images which drifted across the four walls of The Main House at the Old Market.

I enjoyed looking at the images initially, but my eyes started to feel heavy, and listening to the cues of my body, I gently closed my eyes and surrendered to the sound.

Only 22 minutes long, each Soundbath is just enough time to really let go. I have to say that the time passed in a flash.

As someone who struggles with ‘switching off,’ I have learned to wave the thoughts that crowd my brain on.

This usually takes some doing, but the combination of the space, the sensory motion of being enveloped in a beanbag, the darkness and of course, the sounds meant that I was soon floating on a cloud.

I left The Old Market so much more relaxed, but also a little spaced out. One of those really great feelings that is so hard to explain, but sometimes so necessary.

The soundbath is one of many events being held in the space.

The intention behind Feel Good brings together artists and communities, creating new ways to join in, gather, connect and be present through the live arts.

“Expect a joyous week of music, visuals and unforgettable performances with an exciting line-up of established and up-and-coming performers all exploring and celebrating the healing power of listening together,” the Old Market explained in a press release.
