A soaring Rachmaninoff score, beautiful direction and quietly emotional performances have made David Lean’s film a true romantic classic.

Brief Encounter captured the hearts of movie goers and is still recognised as one of the best British films ever made.

It was first released in 1946, and was set, for the most part, on a railway station platform, it told the tale of an unrequited love between a doctor and a married woman.

As it turns 80, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse is celebrating with a special showing of the movie followed by a screening of the documentary Briefest Encounters.

The afternoon is rounded off with a Q&A session with Briefest Encounter film makers Joanna Crosse and Luke Taylor from Meaningful Films.

Briefest Encounters tells the story of actor Cyril Raymond, who played Celia Johnson’s put-upon husband in the original film.

Cyril had enjoyed his own brief encounter with fellow actor Janet Morrison while they were both starring in a play on Broadway in 1929 and the affair resulted in the birth of a child, a little boy named Nicolas.

Initially, Nicolas lived with his mother but was adopted at four years old and never knew his true identity. Now, Joanna Crosse, his daughter, tells this remarkable story for the first time.

Using interviews, diaries and archive material, Joanna, who presents the documentary, explains how this particular tale of unrequited love had heart breaking consequences for all involved.
