A sixth form college has been given a £4.44 million boost to help fund a new skills and business centre for young people.
Varndean Sixth Form College said that the government grant would fund a Skills and Business Building, “representing a major investment in education for young people across Brighton and Hove and Sussex.”
The funding, from the Government’s Post-16 Capacity Fund, will enable the college to create nine new teaching rooms.
These are expected to provide dedicated space for business education while part of its campus is due to be transformed as temporary classrooms are replaced with high-quality permanent facilities.
The new building is expected to provide “modern teaching and learning spaces”.
It will support the sixth form college “in continuing to offer a broad and ambitious education and a breadth of opportunities to young people from across the city and wider Sussex area”.
The principal Donna-Marie Janson said: “This is fantastic news for Varndean Sixth Form College and for young people across Brighton and Hove and Sussex.
“It is a significant investment in their education and in the opportunities we can continue to provide.
“At Varndean Sixth Form College, we are proud to provide young people with an ambitious, high-quality education and the opportunities they need to flourish.
“This funding means we can invest in new, permanent teaching spaces for our students while continuing to offer the breadth of education and opportunity that is so important to us.
“We are incredibly proud that this investment will benefit not only the students who are with us today but generations of young people who will come through the college in the years ahead.”
The new Skills and Business Building is expected to open to students in August 2028.
