Brighton services suspended after train hits someone near Fishersgate

Two men have been arrested and an axe was seized after a fight on a train that caused hours of disruption on the rail network on Monday evening (5 October).

Armed police were sent to Haywards Heath railway station as the British Transport Police (BTP) and Sussex Police responded to reports of two men squaring up, one of them wielding an axe.

The station was closed for about 20 minutes as police prepared their response to the incident.

No one appears to have been injured but the incident disrupted services for three hours between Brighton and Haywards Heath.

The BTP said: “We were called at around 7.10pm on Monday 5 October to reports of an altercation on a train in the Cooksbridge area.

“Officers responded with Sussex Police colleagues.

“We believe that those involved were known to each other and left the train at Cooksbridge.

“Specialist firearms officers were among those responding following reports that an axe was seen.

“An axe was seized and there is no evidence that anyone was struck with the weapon and no reports of any other serious injuries.

“Two men were arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon and remain in custody.

“Further inquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help police should text BTP on 61016, or call 0800 405040, using the reference 682 of 5 October.

“Information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
