A fire closed a short section of the A23 in the centre of Brighton last night (Thursday 8 October).
Six fire engines were sent to York Place to tackle a fire in a flat opposite St Peter’s Church.
The blaze, close to the old York Place Elementary School girls’ school entrance arch, was put out within an hour of the first 999 call.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 6.52pm to reports of a residential building fire in York Place, Brighton.
“Six fire engines are currently in attendance.
“As of 7.16pm, crews have been tackling the fire using breathing apparatus and one main jet.
“Please avoid the area.”
In an update at 7.45pm, the fire service said: “The fire is now out. All persons were evacuated and are accounted for.”
Sussex Police said: “We are currently assisting the fire service following a fire at a flat in York Place, Brighton.
“A section of the road has been closed as emergency services remain at the scene and we’re urging the public to avoid the area in the meantime.
“No injuries have been reported.”
