An American firm has bought one of Brighton and Hove’s biggest employers in a deal value at more than £2 billion.

Asurion, a global leader in technology care, support, and protection, has completed the acquisition of Domestic and General (D&G), the appliance care experts. D&G protects, repairs and replaces millions of household appliances worldwide.

The business employs about 300 people at its offices in New England Street, Brighton, having moved there in early 2024 from its old Queen Square premises, near the Clock Tower.

The US company bought D&G from venture capital firm CVC Capital Partners and Luxinva, a business owned by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

The new owner said that it had no immediate plans to change how Asurion and D&G served their customers and partners as a result of the deal.

Domestic and General is expected to continue operating under its existing brand name within Asurion.

The American company’s chief executive Guru Gowrappan said: “Technology is becoming more essential to everyday life and more connected and complex.

“Our job at Asurion is simple: make technology work. Bringing Asurion and Domestic and General together expands our ability to do that across more of the technology and appliances people rely on every day while extending our reach to millions more customers around the world.”

Asurion said: “Domestic and General is a trusted leader in appliance care and protection, with more than a century of experience – and partnerships with more than 100 leading brands including Whirlpool, Sky, Hoover-Candy and John Lewis.

D&G chief executive Matthew Crummack said: “Domestic and General has built its business on trusted care, strong partner relationships and deep expertise in appliance care and protection.

“Those strengths, combined with Asurion’s technology care capabilities and our shared commitment to customer and partner excellence, make this a compelling fit. We’re excited about what we can build together in this next chapter of growth.”

Gowrappan added: “As homes become more connected, customers shouldn’t have to navigate a different solution for every device or appliance they own.

“Together, Asurion and D&G have an opportunity to make that complexity simpler, helping customers protect, manage and get more value from their technology throughout its life.”

Expect increase in prices, hard sell sales techniques and outsourcing of call centres to the third world. Whenever an American owner gets involved , it’s all about profit, profit

Weren’t they making a profit already ??? or do YOU decide who makes money,,, or not ???? Nothing new in outsourcing work, like most companies do, better quality, cheaper costs, less TAXES,

Less rights, less protection, less democracy…….
If you are making profits in this country, you should be paying your dues.

Stan, outsourcing typically increases costs and reduces quality. It’s short-termism popular with MBAs and boards with no longer-term incentives. You clearly have no experience nor expertise as an outsourcer or outsourcee.

I won’t challenge the point about taxes because it is as stupid as it is irrelevant.

More sanctimonious drivel, you talk “quality” in this country, it’s been the lack of consistent quality that has ruined the industries in this country, cars that fall apart, new builds never finished and with multiple faults, I’ve worked in a few different countries, seen the differences, 100 Brits per month sent back monthly from the Middle East, Dubai, fake qualifications and clueless. Done plenty of construction here too, seen the “quality” of it.

“Domestic and General has built its business on trusted care, strong partner relationships and deep expertise in appliance care and protection.” I’ve had dealings with D & G and, in common with everyone else I know that’s dealt with them, I detest them. Lying scam merchants is putting it mildly. Under American ownership things will only get worse.

My sister has warranties with them and surprisingly, speaks very highly of them. She’s had several appliances fixed under her policies & thinks its quite good value for money. I also know someone who works there & says they are quite good employers. Although that all may change under American ownership….
